In survey design, surveys collect extensive descriptions of variables and use the data to justify and analyse conditions and procedures in order to build strategies for improving health care practices; variables can be characterised as views, attitudes, or facts. The association between two or more variables is studied in correlational studies; the researcher does not assess whether one variable causes another. Single-variable research focuses on a single variable rather than a statistical relationship between two variables. Because the data in qualitative research is frequently non-numerical, statistical approaches cannot be used to examine it. Depending on the study issue, qualitative data requires a different set of analytic techniques. Thematic analysis, for example, focuses on themes that emerge from data, whereas conversation analysis focuses on how words are said in an interview or focus group.
