Question

Make a presentation & report on WHY THE SUN BURNS WITHOUT OXYGEN?

Sahil Sharma · Accepted Answer

The sun does not run out of oxygen because the sun does use oxygen to burn. The sun's burning is not the same as chemical combustion. It's the process of nuclear fusion. Don't imagine the sun as a massive campfire. It's working is similar as of hydrogen bomb.

In a carbon-based fire, there are many additional chemical processes that take place, but the burning of carbon and hydrogen atoms is the most important. The heat and light emitted by the flame are the result of this combustion, which releases energy. Campfires, oven flames, candle flames, barbecue grills, forest fires, gas furnaces, gasoline burning in motors, and so on are all examples of carbon combustion. It's important to note that carbon combustion necessitates the presence of oxygen. Carbon combustion comes to a halt when there is no more oxygen available.

Atomic nuclei are fused together to form new, larger nuclei in nuclear fusion. Because an atom's nucleus controls what it is and how it acts, changing the nucleus leads the atom to become a new element. Two hydrogen atoms, for example, fuse to form one helium atom. Nuclear fusion does not necessitate the use of oxygen. In reality, you won't require any further materials. Simply apply enough pressure or heat to get the nuclei of the atoms near enough to overcome electrostatic repulsion and form a single nucleus. Other bombs offer the tremendous pressures and temperatures needed in a nuclear fusion bomb. Magnetic confinement fields, the insertion of electromagnetic waves, and the injection of high-energy particles create the severe pressures and temperatures in a tokamak nuclear fusion reactor. Gravity provides the extreme pressures and temperatures found in stars. Because a star has such a big mass, the gravitational pull it inward enough to initiate nuclear fusion. Nuclear fusion in stars produces enormous amounts of energy, which humans see as sunlight. Fusion energy is also used to keep the nuclear fusion reaction going. Our sun has a temperature of 16 million Kelvin and a pressure of 25 trillion trillion Newtons per square metre at its core. The sun heats up to the point that it glows and releases light, similar to how a piece of metal glows red when heated.

The electromagnetic force and the strong nuclear force are the two fundamental forces at work in nuclear fusion. The repulsive electromagnetic force between positively charged nuclei has a great range but is weak, whereas the attractive strong nuclear force has a small range but is powerful. When two nuclei are far apart enough, the repulsive electromagnetic force takes over and holds them apart. The electromagnetic repulsion between the two nuclei becomes stronger as they approach closer together, making it increasingly difficult to push them together. When two nuclei are near enough together, the attractive short-range nuclear force takes over, and the two nuclei stick together to form a new nucleus. As a result, it takes a lot of force to bring nuclei near enough to fuse together.

In theory, any two nuclei can be fused together to form a single nucleus. However, because they have minimal electric charge, it is simplest to fuse nuclei with low electromagnetic repulsion. The lighter elements, such as hydrogen and helium, have the lowest electric charge nuclei. The majority of fusion in stars occurs when hydrogen reacts with itself or with other light elements.Because gravity is what creates the pressure that allows stars to spark nuclear fusion, and gravity is created by mass, all you need is a large enough amount of hydrogen to produce blazing stars. The oxygen content of stars is quite low. The oxygen that is there was generated by hydrogen fusing several times until the oxygen was formed.
